Spring Training: Conferences and continuing education

Waivers: Who are They For, and What are They Good for?
March 12, 3:30-4:30 p.m., at 16 Iowa Communications Network sites statewide
An Interactive ICN presentation sponsored by the Center for Disabilities and Development. Designed for school nurses, AEA personnel, families, social workers, in-home care providers, and anyone interested in learning more about waiver programs. Emotions, Emotional Outbursts, Anger and Depression

Training for Home Contractors And Remodelers
March 19, 6 to 9:00 p.m., Menard's, Mason City
March 21, 6 to 9:00 p.m., Menard's, Dubuque
Learn about housing design options and building products; resources for plans, product information, and technical assistance; marketing and financing; and how aging, age related illnesses, and disabilities affect people's ability to function in their home. All participants will be listed in a variety of statewide resource projects which make referrals to customers. Approved by the National Association of Home Builders and Iowa Home Builders and Remodelers. $40 registration fee includes training and a notebook of materials and resources. Understanding the Explosive Child: Timely Tips and Tasty Treats
March 21, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (arrive by 6:15), on the Iowa Communications Network
Want some help understanding children and students of any age who exhibit challenging behaviors? Wonder why traditional methods of discipline aren't working for some while they do for others? Looking for new strategies that will work? Kathy Miller, Principal of Prairie Oaks at College Community Schools, will present information based on her training with Ross Green, author of The Explosive Child. She will share methods for identifying children's needs, and strategies you can use (at home and at school) to respond in ways that meet a child's needs. $3 per person, or two for $5. Substance Abuse and ADD: After Diagnosis, Now What?

Examine the behaviors and symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, and discover strategies to work with individuals with ADD in a treatment setting. Target Audience: treatment supervisors and counselors, nurses, prevention specialists, public health workers, social workers, corrections professionals, and all other helping professionals. $45 registration fee before March 19; $60 after March 19.
